Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The Premier Lacrosse League fined and suspended Chrome goalie Brett Queener on Tuesday for a vicious crosscheck that knocked Redwoods attackman Jules Heningburg out of a game and sent him into the concussion protocol two days earlier.
This is the first time the PLL has taken such action against one of its players. Some were critical of the league for not doing enough to curtail fighting and violent plays earlier this season.
Chrome coach Dom Starsia apologized to Heningburg on Twitter.
“I understand things happen and emotions can be high when competing,” Heningburg replied. “I am feeling much better and will be back healthy in time for playoffs.”
The PLL is off this weekend. Teams will travel to Columbus, Ohio, next weekend for the first round of playoffs. Chaos, Whipsnakes, Archers and Redwoods qualified for the championship bracket. Atlas and Chrome will compete in the race for rights to next year’s No. 1 draft pick.
2. Goalie Angus Goodleaf collapsed on the floor while competing for the Kahnawake Mohawks in the Presidents Cup, Canada’s Senior B national box lacrosse championship, according to reports by The Eastern Door.
Goodleaf, who recently signed a two-year contract with the National Lacrosse League’s New York Riptide, regained consciousness and was transported to an area hospital as the game resumed. Brandon Miller relieved Goodleaf and made 31 saves, as the Mohawks defeated the Capital Region Axemen 11-6.
The Mohawks tweeted Wednesday morning that Goodleaf is OK and recovering from the episode at the hospital.
3. Lacrosse fans were loving baseball for a change Tuesday when a training video Big League Edge showed a coach using a lacrosse stick to practice receiving the ball on a bunt.
The video, originally posted in April, only now made the rounds on lacrosse channels after surfacing on Paul Rabil’s Twitter feed.
