Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The Pat Spencer sweepstakes have officially begun.
The Archers Lacrosse Club selected Spencer first overall in Monday’s Premier Lacrosse League draft, the broadcast of which aired on NBC Sports overnight, a little more than a month after the Chesapeake Bayhawks made him a first-round pick (No. 7 overall) in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Will he choose MLL or PLL? Or will he eschew both to play college basketball? Welcome to “The Decision 2019.”
“He’s a young man that’s got some options, and we respect that,” Archers LC head coach Chris Bates said during the studio show. “In 1978, the Celtics took Larry Bird with a pick and waited a year. If that’s what we have to do, then that’s what we have to do.”
Virginia’s Ryan Conrad (Atlas), Towson’s Zach Goodrich (Chrome) and Alex Woodall (Whipsnakes), Cornell’s Clarke Petterson (Redwoods) and Army’s Johnny Surdick (Chaos) also went in the first round of the PLL draft. The draft order was previously chosen at random.
2. Patrick Stevens’ bracketology examines the likelihood that conferences like the Big East and CAA will be one and done come Selection Sunday — leaving teams like Denver and Towson vulnerable if they’re unable to claim automatic qualifiers.
3. Northwestern is pushing all the right buttons in its late-season resurgence, plus a look at Selena Lasota’s ascent of the NCAA’s all-time goals list and synopses of several conference races in the weekly women’s notebook.
4. Syracuse has a top-10 defense for the first time since Joel White wrought havoc between the 30s in 2011. Coupled with a balanced offense, the Orange look capable of making a push for their first trip to Memorial Day weekend since 2013.
5. Stony Brook stretched its winning streak to eight games Tuesday at Penn State. The No. 17-ranked Seawolves defeated the Nittany Lions 16-11 behind six goals and a career-high 12 draw controls from Ally Kennedy. The Seawolves used a 10-goal run spanning more than 25 minutes of game time — there was a lightning delay late in the first half — to take command.
Also on Tuesday, No. 8 Michigan also defeated Detroit Mercy 14-7.
6. Yale throttled Quinnipiac 24-7 on Tuesday. Just how lopsided was the game? The No. 2-ranked and defending NCAA champion Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats 63-28, won 27 of 36 faceoffs and rotated through all four of their goalies. Jackson Morrill led Yale with two goals and eight assists, while Jack Tigh and Matt Brandau each contributed three goals and two assists.
Also on Tuesday, Brown won the Ocean State Cup for Rhode Island bragging rights with a 17-7 win over Bryant. George Grell and Jack Kniffin led the Bears with four goals apiece.
