Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. In a cost-cutting measure due to COVID-19, Furman University has cut its men’s lacrosse team.

Furman first sponsored men’s lacrosse in 2014 with head coach Richie Meade tabbed to start the program. The Furman baseball team was also discontinued among a slew of other money related issues, like furloughs and salary reductions.

A letter from Furman athletic director Jason Donnelly said that all scholarships will be honored for student-athletes whose programs were cut. More here.

2. East Carolina University is reportedly planning to cut programs in the very near future.

Kate Murphy and Luke Decock of the News & Observer report that “one or more of the 20 sports” at ECU could be cut, though none of been specified as of yet. ECU interim chancellor Ron Mitchelson said the timeline on a decision was “a matter of days, not a matter of weeks.”

3. Jared Bernhardt will play football next season.

He had been in the transfer portal since August 2019 in hopes of rekindling his football career, and he’s found his next home. The 2019 Tewaaraton finalist and all-time Maryland great will suit up for Division II powerhouse Ferris State next season. More here.

4. A pair of Major League Lacrosse draft picks put pen to paper yesterday.

Charlie Trense, the seventh overall pick, signed with the Lizards, and third-round pick Chase Levesque inked his contract with the Bayhawks.

5. Decorated Garden City (N.Y.) girls’ lacrosse coach Diane Chapman has retired.

In 18 years coaching the girls’ lacrosse team, Chapman won 10 state titles and amassed a record of 314-43-1. She also coached 29 years of field hockey, winning seven more state titles. More here.

6. New York Congressman Max Rose introduced legislation to provide relief to youth sports leagues, activity groups and working families.

US Lacrosse CEO Steve Stenersen is serving on the advisory council for the PLAY Sports Coalition, which aims to support young athletes, working families, coaches and volunteers through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
