Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. There wasn’t a vacancy at Cornell for very long.
Less than 24 hours after Johns Hopkins officially named Peter Milliman its 23rd head men’s lacrosse coach in program history, Cornell promoted assistant coach Connor Buczek to the title of interim head coach for 2021.
Because Cornell is under a hiring freeze, the university will reportedly begin a national search for its next long-term coaching option after next season. Buczek is believed to be in the mix.
2. US Lacrosse Magazine’s Matt DaSilva and Matt Hamilton were invited to a live YouTube press conference Monday afternoon with Milliman and Johns Hopkins athletic director Jennifer S. Baker.
Although Milliman had no previous ties to Hopkins, Baker sees him as a perfect fit. Read more from DaSilva here.
3. Another big fish is out of the transfer portal on the women’s side. Gabby Rosenzweig told US Lacrosse Magazine on Monday that she will transfer to Duke, pending admission. She’s Penn’s all-time leading point scorer. More here.
On the men’s side, former Colgate attackman Griffin Brown is reportedly transferring to Maryland.
4. Another member of the star-studded Syracuse team is coming back for a “last dance.” Stephen Rehfuss, third in the nation in assists per game, is coming back.
5. The IMLCA and IWLCA are among 20 coaches associations that signed an open letter to the NCAA Division I Council last week opposing a request by the Group of Five conference commissioners to relax the rule requiring Football Bowl Subdivision schools to field a minimum of 16 varsity athletic teams.
“We’re asking universities to be creative in their budgeting,” IWLCA executive director Liz Robertshaw said.
6. It’s on to the championship games of the Nike / US Lacrosse Magazine Virtual NCAA Tournament.
On the men’s side, No. 1 Syracuse and No. 6 Virginia go toe-to-toe. On the women’s side, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 5 Syracuse square off. Voting in both polls begins Friday.
