Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The world champions will meet the NCAA champions at US Lacrosse Headquarters this fall. USL announced Wednesday that the U.S. men’s national team will face the NCAA champion Yale Bulldogs, and the women’s national team will battle fellow champion James Madison in the Team USA Fall Classic on Oct. 6.
The men’s team will return to the field for the first time since winning gold against Canada in the FIL World Championship, while the women’s team will begin a new chapter under head coach Jenny Levy.
2. The Canadian Lacrosse Association announced that former Canadian national team coach and legend Gary Gait will take over as general manager for the women’s field lacrosse program. He’ll oversee both the senior women’s team and the U19 team through the 2021 FIL World Cup in Towson, Md.
Gait had previously led the both programs in the last world championship cycle, powering the U19 team to a gold medal in the 2015 FIL U19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championship and the senior team to the silver in last year’s FIL World Cup and IWGA World Games.
3. Towson women’s lacrosse has created an identity based on its lockdown defense over the past few years. Whether it’s zone or man defense, the Tigers have held opponents in check.
Entering the 2019 season, coach Sonia LaMonica will welcome back a slew of returners, including CAA Defender of the Year Olivia Conti. Towson will look to carry the momentum into a potential deep run into May.
4. Princeton men released its 2019 spring schedule on Wednesday, which included a visit to the Naval Academy for the first meeting between the two teams since the 2004 NCAA semifinals. Navy joined Denver as new additions to the 2019 schedule after it was revealed that former coach Bill Tierney would make a visit to his old stomping grounds.
The Tigers’ schedule also includes matchups with Virginia, Johns Hopkins and Rutgers, to name a few.
