Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. The U.S. has clinched the top seed in the FIL Women’s World Cup, appearing as dominant as ever during a 4-0 start in Guildford, England. Team USA has outscored its four opponents by a combined 69-15 margin, including a 17-3 victory Sunday over presumed No. 1 contender Canada in which the U.S. finished on a 14-goal run.

It was a big weekend especially for a pair of former Syracuse stars. Kayla Treanor set a U.S. World Cup single-game record with 12 points in an 18-1 win Saturday over host England, while Michelle Tumolo turned heads with her hustle Sunday in the victory over Canada.

The U.S. has Monday off and will wrap up pool play Tuesday against Wales. Through four games, Treanor leads the team with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists), while former Maryland teammates Alex Aust and Brooke Griffin are tied with a team-high 13 goals apiece.

2. The Boston Cannons announced Friday that neither Dave Lawson nor Chris LaPierre — the two players they received in return for fan favorite Will Manny and Joe LoCascio in a June 27 trade — will play for the team. Lawson told the Cannons he plans to retire. LaPierre did not report to Boston.

It means the last-place Cannons, who fell to 3-7 with a 21-9 loss Sunday at Rochester, received nothing in return for a franchise player and a potential breakout star. Both the Cannons and the Lizards came under fire on social media, the former for not vetting the players it acquired before making the trade and the latter for suspicion they knew all along Lawson would retire rather than suit up elsewhere.

3. The Major League Lacrosse playoff race seems ripe for another photo finish.

Defending champion Denver defeated Ohio 13-11 in a rematch of the 2016 MLL final, an impressive victory considering the Outlaws dressed six rookies in the game. U.S. training team goalie Jack Kelly made 22 saves, as Denver improved to 8-2, followed by Ohio at 7-4. After them, six teams are separated by one game in the loss column.

In other MLL results:

  • Florida coughed up an eight-goal lead, but Dylan Molloy’s game-winning goal allowed the Launch to escape with a 20-19 win Saturday over visiting Chesapeake. Kieran McArdle led Florida with four goals and three assists.

  • Rob Pannell scored four goals and Greg Gurnelian won 19 of 29 faceoffs to lead New York to a 14-11 victory Saturday at Charlotte.

Four teams qualify for MLL playoffs. There are three weeks remaining in the regular season.

4. Shootout for Soldiers raised more than $45,000 during a 24-hour lacrosse event at Fortress Obetz in Ohio, the seventh of 12 stops this summer. Ohio State coach Nick Myers, who on Sunday acknowledged the one-year mark since he led the U.S. U19 team to a gold medal win over Canada by supporting the U.S. women, coached a team of veterans in the event. Shootout for Soldiers has raised more than $438,000 so far this summer, with previous events in Atlanta, Houston, Hudson Valley, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston.
