Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
Things felt a little normal this weekend, which is to say nothing was normal, and that’s the way we love February lacrosse.
1. In men’s lacrosse, there were two upsets involving top 5 teams, as Army overcame a slow start, falling behind 6-1, before rallying to beat No. 2 Syracuse 18-11 on Sunday behind four goals and three assists from Brendan Nichtern.
On Saturday, Rutgers had the feel-good story of the weekend as transfers Colin Kirst and Connor Kirst led their late father’s alma mater to an 11-9 upset over No. 4 Penn State.
In other big games, No. 3 Virginia improved to 3-0 with a win over Loyola, Ohio State spoiled the debut of new Johns Hopkins coach Peter Milliman and Jake Carraway went off for eight goals as Georgetown blitzed Villanova 16-1.
2. In women’s lacrosse, half of the top 10 teams suffered losses this weekend, including a pair of upsets in the Big Ten on Sunday with Penn State outlasting No. 8 Maryland and Ohio State shocking No. 9 Michigan, a far cry from a week ago when the Buckeyes trailed Northwestern 18-0 in the second half.
No. 4 Syracuse will climb in the rankings after a blistering start resulted in an 18-6 win over No. 3 Loyola.
A pair of traditional ACC powers, Virginia and Duke, made early statements. The Cavaliers jumped all over No. 10 Richmond early, avenging a loss to the Spiders from a year ago, with a 15-9 win. The Blue Devils’ defense showed up in a 12-8 win over Virginia Tech.
Hofstra’s Alyssa Parrella became the all-time leading goal scorer in Colonial Athletic Association history with a seven-goal effort in a 17-11 win over Connecticut. Parrella now has 226 career goals, breaking the mark of 221 set by Loyola’s Stacey Morlang (1999-2002).
