Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. Joe Varello just wanted to beat his little brother, Danny, at the faceoff x. As Navy’s star faceoff man, he knew he’d match up with his brother and Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

He won the battle with his brother, taking 16 of 27 faceoffs. But what he might remember the most about his day came late in the fourth quarter. After Navy tied the game at 12-12 with nine seconds left, Joe Varello beat his brother out, grabbed the ground ball and ran through a few checks to fire home the game-winning goal with 0.2 seconds left.

It was Navy’s biggest win of the year, but what most will remember from this game happened as time expired. The Varello brothers took the final faceoff, and then hugged each other at midfield as the Midshipmen celebrated the victory. It was one of the top moments of the season.

2. Kylie Ohlmiller etched her name into NCAA lacrosse history once again on Saturday. And of course, she did it in #SCTop10-worthy fashion.

With Stony Brook up 9-5 on UMBC, Ohlmiller charged toward the cage and scored on a jumping, behind-the-back shot that made its rounds all over Lacrosse Twitter. That goal moved Ohlmiller past former Maryland great Jen Adams for first all-time on the NCAA lacrosse career points list with 446, shattering a record that lasted for 17 years. Her six assists also helped her overtake Hannah Nielsen for first on the NCAA career assists list. She now has 226 for her career.

And let’s not forget teammate Courtney Murphy, whose NCAA career goals record was celebrated with a t-shirt on Saturday. She had eight goals and three assists for a career-high 11 points.

3. No. 1 and No. 2 both fell in men’s action over the weekend, with No. 1 Albany getting dominated by Ben Reeves and No. 5 Yale, and Maryland falling to Ohio State in rematch of last year’s national championship game.

Connor Fields left Sunday’s matchup with Yale in the first quarter after injuring his leg while making a cut. Just two games back from a sprained MCL, his leg appeared to buckle. Without Fields in the lineup, the Great Danes were outscored by six goals en route to a 14-6 loss to the Bulldogs.

Yale led 4-1 after one quarter and 7-3 at halftime. Albany cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Bulldogs responded with five straight goals to give the Great Danes no chance of a comeback. 

Reeves was strong throughout, routinely being double-teamed by Albany and finding a way to get his teammates involved. He and Matt Gaudet finished with three goals each.

Maryland fell victim to a big day from Jack Jasinski (2G, 5A) and lost 12-10 to Ohio State — the second home loss for the Terps this season. For the Buckeyes, it was a chance to avenge last year's title game heartbreaker to the Terps.

The game was tied 6-6 at halftime, but Ohio State used a three-goal, fourth-quarter rally to pull away from Maryland before Connor Kelly scored his fourth goal late to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Also on Sunday, Rutgers picked up a huge conference win in Piscataway in primetime, downing Penn State 11-8. Jules Heningburg had a team-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead the way.

The Scarlet Knights used a run of seven out of eight goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. They stayed in command until Penn State mounted a comeback and cut the deficit to one goal with 12 minutes remaining on a Mac O'Keefe goal. Kieran Mullins and Christian Mazzone scored twice late in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The Scarlet Knights now sit in a three-way tie for third place in the Big Ten, while Maryland and Johns Hopkins sit in first at 3-1.

Michael Kraus was the hero for Virginia in a 10-9 victory over Vermont on Saturday. He scored the game-winning goal with 1:47 left — an achievement made even more special knowing that he did it at his former high school in New Canaan (Conn.).

Penn avoided an upset at the hands of Dartmouth thanks to a game-winning goal from Kevin McGeary in double overtime. The trend of game-winners continued with Kyle Marr’s clincher with 31.1 seconds left that helped Johns Hopkins beat Michigan.

Let’s not forget Friday’s action, which saw Loyola clinch the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League with a 12-8 win over Army. Will Sands became Bucknell’s all-time assists leader with seven helpers in a 14-7 win over Lehigh. Duke also held Marquette in check en route to a 17-5 victory.

4. In more women’s action, Virginia Tech downed arch rival Virginia for the second time in school history on Saturday. The win was the Hokies 12th this season, which broke a school record. Virginia Tech is now 5-2 in ACC play, which matches the number of conference wins in the previous 13 seasons combined.

Also in ACC play, Jamie Ortega dropped seven goals to help North Carolina rout Duke, and Syracuse is winless in the ACC no more after dominating Louisville 19-8. Darby Kiernan broke her own school record for points in a season as Colorado clinched the Pac-12 top seed.

5. The MLL is back. Major League Lacrosse kicked off its 2018 season on Saturday night. The Dallas Rattlers took the field for the first time and downed the Chesapeake Bayhawks 15-9 behind four goals and an assist from U.S. national team member Jordan Wolf.

Blaze Riorden had a career-high 32 saves for the Rattlers. 

In other MLL action, Charlotte burst out for 25 goals in an 18-goal win over the Boston Cannons. Kevin Cooper had a career-high seven gaols for the Hounds. Also, Will Manny and Rob Pannell combined for 15 goals to help the New York Lizards top the 2017 runners-up Denver Outlaws 19-15.

In the lone Sunday game, Florida scored seven of the first eight goals and survived a rally from the Atlanta Blaze to win 13-10. Dylan Molloy had a team-high four points.

6. The Georgia Swarm were idle this weekend, but find themselves on top the NLL East standings in what has been a revolving door of contenders this season. The Rochester Knighthawks had command of the division entering the weekend, but fell 11-6 to the New England Black Wolves behind 59 saves from Aaron Bold.

The Swarm (9-7) now sit 0.5 games ahead of Rochester and New England (9-8). And one game behind them are Toronto and Buffalo, after the Rock downed the Bandits on Saturday. Adam Jones, Rob Hellyer and Challen Rogers each had three goals and two assists for the Rock.

WHAT WE’RE READING

• The Toronto Rock’s win over the Buffalo Bandits signaled that it’s still in the thick of the NLL East playoff race.
