1. The Peterborough Lakers were crowned the Major Series Lacrosse champions in Ontario last night, defeating the Six Nations Chiefs 9-7 to advance to the 2017 Mann Cup.
Kyle Buchanan and Shawn Evans led Peterborough with four points apiece. Zach Currier and Adam Jones led the offensive front with two goals each.
With the 4-1 edge in the best-of-seven MSL final, the Lakers now have won the Ontario title eight times in the past 14 years for a total 25 times in 67 years, dating back to their first crown in 1951.
The Lakers will play the New Westminster Salmonbellies for the Mann Cup in B.C. starting Sept. 9.

2. Sept. 1 is upon us. Today marks the official start of direct recruiting contact between college lacrosse coaches and high school juniors, which is the result of a watershed recruiting legislation that went into effect April 14.
Some coaches planned to text prospective student-athletes at midnight, including Bucknell coach Remington Steele, while many others, like Denver coach Bill Tierney, hoped kids were sleeping at midnight.
With all the hype – and some even suggesting implementing midnight practices like NCAA basketball – coaches, players and fans alike responded on social media at midnight.

4. Kyle Sweeney retired Thursday and penned an emotional farewell letter for The Players’ Tribune, chronicling his journey from the beginning in middle-class Springfield (Pa.).
His first lacrosse stick purchased from The Sporting Goods Place back in 1993 – the STX Gait Strung Turbo – changed his life forever.
Sweeney, 36, has played more games in the MLL than any other player in the league’s 17-year history. He is a seven-time MLL All-Star and two-time member of the U.S. national team.
“In my mind, I could keep playing forever,” Sweeney wrote in “A Love Letter to Lacrosse.” “But at age 36, the wear and tear on my body is catching up to me, but moreover the wear and tear on my psyche is much worse. And more than anything else, it’s time to focus on my family and what’s next for us.”

5. The Denver Outlaws joined the Broncos in community efforts as part of their final NFL preseason game against the Cardinals last night.
Mascot Stix the Outlaw teamed up with other area mascots to play the Broncos’ Boys and Girls Club. The two teams also sent T-shirts to Houston, joining the relief effort due to Hurricane Harvey.

6. US Lacrosse announced rules changes for both boys and girls in 2018, many of which regarded safety.
For boys’ lacrosse, points of emphasis included stick checks to the head and mouth guards, while in girls’ lacrosse, three second and shooting rules were stressed, as well as implementing cards for cross checks and pushing in the midfield.
