Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. It was a busy day on and off the field in college lacrosse. Off the field, two prominent men’s lacrosse jobs will open with Navy reportedly letting Rick Sowell go and Harvard removing Chris Wojczik as head coach.
2. Three No. 1 seeds went down in conference men’s lacrosse tournaments Thursday with Drexel beating UMass, UMBC topping Stony Brook and Robert Morris knocking off Mount St. Mary’s. Lucky for at-large hopefuls, none are considered a threat to be a bid thief come Sunday.
The most notable result was Johns Hopkins beating rival Maryland for the second time in less than a week. The Blue Jays are very much back in the NCAA tournament picture heading into Saturday’s Big Ten championship game against Penn State.
3. There were no major surprises in the semifinal round of eight NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournaments on Thursday, but plenty of notable performances. Among them:
-
Sydney Pirreca tying a Florida record with 11 points (5g, 6a) in the Gators 19-10 win over Vanderbilt in the American Athletic Conference.
-
Jenny Kinsey setting a Jacksonville record with 10 points (8g, 2a) as the Dolphins beat Kennesaw State 24-8 in the Atlantic Sun.
-
Marist’s Hailey Wagner grabbing 10 draw controls to break Kayla Treanor’s NCAA single-season record in a losing effort to Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
-
Loyola’s Hannah Powers setting a Patriot League tournament record with eight goals in a 20-12 win over Colgate.
4. Patrick Stevens weekly men’s notebook looks at Notre Dame’s Kevin Corrigan’s handling of a competitive goalie situation and the progress made by Cleveland State in the third year of the program.
5. The nation’s top women’s college club lacrosse teams will head to Virginia Beach next week for the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates national championship. Paul Ohanian previews the event.
