Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Northwestern, ranked No. 10 in this week’s Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’ Top 20, scored the first three goals of the game and got nine goals from Selena Lasota in a 23-13 win at Rutgers in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams. Izzy Scane added six goals, including five of the Wildcats’ first six, before Lasota tallied five in a row for Northwestern in the second half as the Wildcats extended a 14-7 halftime lead.
Elsewhere among the handful of women’s games yesterday, freshman Belle Martire scored the game-winning goal with 18 seconds to play in William and Mary’s 9-8 win at Davidson. Classmate Starr Howard locked it up for the Tribe by winning the ensuing draw.
Louisville defeated Cincinnati, 18-12, behind four goals apiece from Kayla Marshall and Shayla Scanlan.
2. Bates has won four straight games and showing some resemblance to its 2017 season, leading off a Division III men’s notebook.
3. Mount Olive has been solid as it continues its seventh varsity season, but the Trojans remain in search of statement wins to boost NCAA tournament hopes, as chronicled in a Division II women’s notebook.
4. No. 3 Cornell travels to No. 1 Yale Saturday for an Ivy League showdown, headlining our men’s weekend watch. ESPNEWS will broadcast that game live. Faceoff time is 1 p.m.
One game that won’t be happening Saturday is No. 10 Denver at No. 7 Ohio State. The game has been canceled due to the blizzard that hit Colorado, prohibiting the Pioneers from making the trip to Columbus.
5. The former home of the 1996 Summer Olympics and the Atlanta Braves will be a home for the Premier Lacrosse League. Petit Field at Georgia State Stadium will host the PLL’s fifth week of games June 28-29. The facility was built to host the Olympics before being converted to Turner Field for the Braves, who recently departed for a new stadium. Georgia State University since has converted it into the home of its football team.
