Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. It’s onto the semifinals in the World Lacrosse Men’s U21 Championship.
The U.S. advanced easily with a 21-3 victory over Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Brennan O’Neill scored a game-high five goals and Alex Slusher paced the attack with four goals and four assists.
The U.S. will play the Haudenosaunee in the semifinals today at 2 p.m. local time (7 p.m. Eastern) in Limerick, Ireland. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
The Haudenosaunee advanced with a 7-5 victory over England in a quarterfinal that was equal parts intriguing and chippy. England called for two stick checks resulting in Haudenosaunee penalties in the final minute. An illegal body check put the Haudenosaunee three men down, but they held on to win.
Canada beat host Ireland 17-7 behind a perfect 28-for-28 performance by faceoff specialist Bo Columbus and Australia scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to top previously unbeaten Japan 8-6 in the other two quarterfinals Wednesday. They’ll play each other in the semifinal preceding the U.S.-Haudenosaunee game.
2. Old Dominion introduced its new women’s lacrosse coach Wednesday.
Theresa Walton, the reigning Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, will lead the Monarchs after steering Youngstown State to a share of the regular season conference title in just its second season. She was previously as assistant at Virginia Commonwealth and played at Canisius.
3. USA Lacrosse named 44 of the nation's top high school girls' lacrosse players to the 2022 USA Select U16 and U18 teams. The players were selected following a national combine at USA Lacrosse headquarters last week that featured 150 players.
4. Christian Cosme, the driver at fault in a fatal car crash six years ago, found his faith and lacrosse in the aftermath. The 30-year-old amputee went viral recently for scoring a goal in a men’s league game in North Carolina. A story by Kenny DeJohn.
