UIndy, the defending Division II national champion, announced on Tuesday the hiring of Elaine Jones as the university’s new head women’s lacrosse coach. Jones was previously the head coach at Longwood.

Jones, who will begin her duties effective immediately, replaces James Delaney, who was fired from the university this summer — less than three months after winning a national title.

Jones spent 10 seasons at Longwood, earning Big South Coach of the Year in 2019. Longwood led the nation in assists per game in 2018.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be chosen as the next head coach for the women’s lacrosse program at UIndy,” Jones said in the official release. “I’d like to thank Mary Beth Bagg, Erin Abbott-Gillin, and the members of the search committee for this amazing opportunity.”

Prior to Longwood, Jones became the winningest head coach at UC Davis, winning 97 games in 11 seasons and succesfully transition the program to Division I during her tenure.

A two-time All-American during her playing days at Virginia, Jones was also a member of the USA Elite Team in 1992 and 1993. She was inducted into the Greater Baltimore U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2015 and was the first female athlete welcomed as part of the inaugural class for Friends School of Baltimore’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
