Defending Ivy League champion Cornell made an early statement with a 10-4 victory over Penn at chilly Franklin Field in both team’s league opener. The No. 17 Big Red, who won last year’s Ivy League tournament with an 11-10 win over Penn, held the No. 8 Quakers scoreless for the last 33 plus minutes of the game.

Cornell (2-1) fell behind 2-0 early and was down 3-2 after Penn’s Gabby Rosenzweig scored with 13:53 remaining in the first half. Kristy Gilbert then scored the first of her two goals just 42 seconds later to start a four-goal run for the Big Red. Alex Condon stopped the run for Penn on a goal with 3:23 left in the opening half to cut Cornell’s lead to 6-4, but that was the last time the Quakers would find the back of the net in the game.

Gilbert opened the second half scoring less than four minutes into the stanza and the Big Red defense did the rest. Penn was limited to just 14 shots (3 in the second half) in the contest, forcing Cornell goalie Renee Poullott to make just three saves to earn the win.

Gilbert, Catherine Ellis, Sara Phillips and Tayler Reed all had two goals for Cornell and Amie Dickson had a goal and two assists.

Penn (3-1) was led by Condon with two goals and goalie Britt Brown made nine saves, but it was the first time this season that the Quakers allowed double-digit goals.

Hokies Beat Duke in Breakthrough Season

Entering this season, Virginia Tech had won just three ACC games total since joining the league in 2005. A breakthrough season added another huge milestone with an 11-6 road win at No. 13 Duke on Saturday. It was the first time in 20 tries that Tech beat Duke in women’s lacrosse and the Hokies improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.

After 10 scoreless minutes to open the game, Virginia Tech scored the next five goals to take command, and Duke never got closer than three. Marissa Davey had four goals, including three of the Hokies’ first six tallies, and Meagh Graham had 11 saves.

“The kids played great today,” Virginia Tech coach John Sung said. “Marissa was all over the place for us. She did a great job running the offense.”

Kyra Harney had a goal and an assist for Duke (4-2, 0-2 ACC)

Penn State Stays Unbeaten

Penn State overcame an impressive performance from Loyola goalie Kady Glynn to remain unbeaten with a 12-8 victory. Glynn made 15 saves for the Greyhounds (0-4), but Katie O’Donnell (4g) and Steph Lazo (2g, 3a) provided enough firepower for the No. 6 Nittany Lions (6-0).

Irish Win Seventh Straight

Notre Dame entered the game averaging 16.6 goals per game, but found a different way to win on Saturday. Louisville’s Brittany Read made 16 saves to keep the Irish offense under wraps, but Notre Dame’s defense, led by Samantha Giacolone’s nine saves was up to the task as the No. 12 Irish edged Louisville 9-7, earning their seventh consecutive victory since opening the season with a 14-13 loss to Northwestern.

Cortney Fortunato led the Notre Dame (7-1, 2-0 ACC) offense with a goal and three assists and Molly Cobb had two goals. Hannah Koloski and Meghan Siverson each had two goals for Louisville (6-2, 0-1 ACC).

Top-Ranked Terps Roll

No. 1 Maryland closed the first half on a nine-goal run and cruised to an 18-7 win over Hofstra. The Terps (4-0) were led by senior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg with five goals and Megan Whittle with three goals. Megan Taylor made 10 saves while allowing just six goals in 53 minutes of action. Morgan Knox had three goals for Hofstra.

D’Orsi Stays Hot as Princeton Wins

Freshman Tess D’Orsi had four goals as No. 9 Princeton opened Ivy League play with a  10-7 win over Brown. D’Orsi has scored at least twice in every game this year in helping the Tigers to a 4-0 start. Ellie DeGarmo also made 12 saves for Princeton and Camille Sullivan had three goals. Carolyn Paletta led Brown with three goals and Mikaela Karlsson made 10 saves.

LeMoyne Edges LIU Post in Top Five Battle

No. 4 LeMoyne opened its season with a  10-6 victory over No. 3 LIU Post. LIU Post scored back-to-back goals to close the first half with a 4-3 lead, but LeMoyne answered by scoring the first three goals of the second half and never trailed. Bryanna Fazio led LeMoyne with four goals and two assists while Connor Bird had two goals and an assist for LIU Post (1-1).

Division III

F&M Rallies Past York in OT

Franklin & Marshall bounced back from a season-opening loss to Washington and Lee with a thrilling 8-7 overtime win against No. 14 York. Katie Groenke scored the game-winner with just 35 seconds left in overtime. Melissa Judge led the Diplomats with three goals while Devin Hursey had a pair of goals for York (2-1).

Generals Stay Stingy to Edge Salisbury

Washington and Lee has scored just 27 goals in its first four games of the season, but it hasn’t mattered. The No. 16 Generals improved to 4-0 with a 6-5 win over No. 19 Salisbury behind another strong defensive effort. The two teams combined for just 24 shots and Hayley Soutter scored two of her three goals during a key three-goal frun for W&L in the second half. Dana King had two goals for Salisbury (2-2).

Late Goal Lifts Messiah Over Mary Washington

Allie Colson’s goal with 4:28 remaining gave Messiah (2-1) a 7-6 victory over No. 20 Mary Washington. Ida Ehrhardt led the Falcons with three goals and an assist and Colson had two tallies. Paige Haskins had two goals for Mary Washington (3-2).

Gettysburg Impressive in Win Over St. Mary’s

No. 5 Gettysburg completely overwhelmed No. 17 St. Mary’s, posting a 16-1 victory. The Bullets (3-0) scored the first 11 goals of the game and held the Seahawks to just six shots. Caroline Jaeger and Maggie Welsh each had three goals for Gettysburg.
