The second season of the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League commenced Saturday and Sunday alongside the Premier Lacrosse League’s debut games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The defending league champion Command started their quest for a repeat with an 11-8 win Saturday over the Fire. Massachusetts native Kristin Igoe led the way with three goals, an assist and four caused turnovers, while Kelyn Freedman scored a team-high three goals for the Fire.

After falling behind 2-0, the Command scored seven unanswered goals to take control of the game. A stellar defensive effort — spearheaded by Megan Douty and Katie Hertsch, who combined to limit Fire attacker Michelle Tumolo just two assists — helped to ensure the victory.

On Sunday, the Fight avenged a 10-9 loss to the Pride last year with a 6-4 win in a hard-fought defensive battle.

Fight newcomer Katrina Dowd provided the early offense, scoring the first goal of the game and then assisting Kayla Treanor. Then Kylie Ohlmiller and Taylor Cummings connected, with Ohlmiller coming from behind the cage and feeding Cummings to give the Fight a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.

The Pride came close to tying the game on a couple of occasions. The Fight successfully defended the 8-meter arc against a potential 2-pointer as time expired. Kelsey Gregerson made eight saves to backstop the victory.

The WPLL will be back in action June 14-15 in Richmond, Va.
