The Georgia Bulldogs, national championship runners-up in each of the past two seasons, occupy the top spot in the first WCLA Division I Top 20 ranking of the 2024 season.
The rankings are compiled by the WCLA’s rankings committee and will be published weekly on Wednesdays throughout the season.
There are major changes from the preseason poll, a reflection of the significant action over the first month of the season.
Georgia is one of four undefeated teams in this week’s poll, with seven of its eight victories coming against Top 20 teams. The Bulldogs finished 4-0 in their own Big Dawgs Classic three weeks ago and posted a 3-0 record at last weekend’s Cactus Class in Arizona.
Utah jumped from No. 17 in the preseason to second in the first regular season ranking, based mainly on a perfect performance at the Golden State Invitational. The Utes registered wins over No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Michigan Club and No. 19 Northeastern in that event.
The top 10 also features three other teams that made significant jumps from their preseason spots in No. 3 Florida Club, No. 4 Virginia Club and No. 9 BYU.
Two-time defending national champion Boston College Club, ranked first in the preseason, dropped to No. 11 after starting with a 2-1 record. The Eagles had their two-year winning streak of 34 games snapped in their season opener last weekend, falling 9-5 to BYU, before rebounding with victories over Oregon Club and No. 12 Notre Dame Club.
No. 17 Auburn, No. 18 Grand Canyon and No. 20 Minnesota join the Top 20 after being unranked in the preseason.
