Erika Chung Assists Tying, Winning Goals as Penn Captures Ivy Championship

Erika Chung found a passing lane. She then found Anna Brandt, who curled around her defender onto the doorstep. It happened so fast.

The ball was in Brandt’s stick for a microsecond. The one-timer in overtime gave Penn a 15-14 win over Yale — a team it beat by 10 in the regular season — in Sunday’s Ivy League championship game.

Down 14-13 after Sky Carrasquillo finished an Olivia Penoyer feed with 3:31 left, Penn turned to Chung to assist the tying goal — a tally by Maria Themelis with 2:14 left in regulation. Yale hit the crossbar with 35 seconds remaining, keeping things tied before overtime.

Brandt’s goal was the first shot of the overtime period. The winning possession was made possible by Aly Feeley’s caused turnover after Yale was the opening draw of the extra session.

Themelis had six goals for the Quakers, and Niki Miles had three goals and two assists. Penoyer dished six assists for Yale, and Jenna Collignon had four goals and one assist.

Neither team could maintain its leads in the contest. They traded one- and two-goal leads throughout, with Yale’s last two-goal lead at 13-11 erased by consecutive goals from Penn’s Bella Kehoe just 25 seconds apart.

Sunday’s game was Penn’s first appearance in the conference title game since 2019 and the first time since 2016 that the opponent wasn’t Princeton.
