After the late-August retirement of longtime head coach Ricky Fried, Georgetown has moved quickly in naming his successor.
On Friday, the Hoyas named Caitlyn Phipps the new head coach of their women’s lacrosse program.
Phipps comes to Georgetown from Maryland, where she was part of incredible success as both an assistant coach and as a player. After winning a Tewaaraton Award in 2010, Phipps returned to College Park an assistant in 2012. She helped the Terps win four national championships.
Phipps also won gold medals in 2009 and 2013 with the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team.
“I’ve always told myself it would take a really special place to get me to leave my alma mater, and Georgetown is just that,” Phipps said in a statement. “Thank you to Cathy Reese for your leadership, guidance, friendship and all the memories we have made together at Maryland. You have taught me what it takes to run a program at the highest level, and I can’t wait to take all I’ve learned from you just a few miles down the road.”
Georgetown finished 7-11 in 2024 and last finished above .500 in a full season in 2019.
