Whalen's OT Winner Lifts Dickinson Over Denison in D-III Men's Tournament

Dickinson very nearly coughed it up.

Leading by four after Luke Whalen’s man-up goal with 7:20 left in the third quarter, Dickinson then suffered from quite a dry spell. The Red Devils didn’t score again until overtime. That is, of course, the best time to score if ever in such a scenario.

Dickinson shook off a four-goal, game-tying run from Denison to close regulation when Whalen finished a feed from Charlie Baughan in overtime to send the Red Devils to the next round of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament.

Dickinson plays Salisbury at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, May 11.

The scoreless stretch for Dickinson was not without several tries. The Red Devils won the next faceoff after going ahead 7-3 and took five shots, a mix of high, wide and blocked attempts.

All told, they couldn’t convert on their final 12 shots of regulation.

Whalen’s three goals and two assists represented a game-high five points. Ramsey Huggins added two goals. Rocco Bognet made eight saves.
