If the opening weekend of Division III is dubbed “week zero,” is it appropriate to call this “Week .5?”
That’s not to discount the efforts of the teams who have sharpened their iron early on, but we’re still a few weeks away from NESCAC teams and other big names from getting going (though reports are that Tufts, Wesleyan and RIT performed well in scrimmages against Dartmouth, Yale and Cornell, respectively).
Other power conferences like the Centennial and Liberty League really haven’t done much yet, either.
The DIII action will really start in earnest next week as more teams play their openers, and it’ll be full steam ahead on March 1 when the NESCAC opens.
This week, three teams in the top 10 of the USA Lacrosse Division III Men’s Top 20 were in action, and they all won. Outside of the Top 20, though, there were results of note.
Grove City played Salisbury to just a two-goal game on Saturday. Colten Lehberg and Luke Rios went a combined 11-for-17 facing off for the Wolverines, keeping the ball away from a potent Gulls offense.
Stevenson notched an impressive 19-14 win against Ohio Wesleyan, with five different Mustangs recording at least three goals. It begs the question: Is Stevenson deserving of a Top 20 spot? We will know more next week when the Mustangs go on the road to battle an always-plucky Muhlenberg.
More Top 20 teams will pick up this coming week, as Washington and Lee, Dickinson, Stevens and Babson all open their seasons. The Division III season is here. Prepare accordingly.
