Mount St. Mary’s has named Tom Gravante’s replacement, tabbing Chris Ryan as its next men’s lacrosse coach. Reports of Ryan’s hiring surfaced late last week, though the school officially announced the hire on Tuesday.
Ryan had been the head coach at Mercyhurst since 2000, leading the Division II program to an NCAA championship in 2011 and an NCAA runner-up finish in May. Under Ryan’s watch, Mercyhurst was a perennial Division II contender and went 268-69.
Gravante had spent the past 28 seasons as the Mount St. Mary’s head coach, going 178-245 in his nearly three decades in charge. The Mount made five postseason appearances under Gravante, but the program hasn’t won double-digit games since 2010.
Mount St. Mary’s went 8-8 in 2023, earning a share of the MAAC regular season championship before losing to Marist in the conference semifinals.
The hiring of Ryan coincides with the hiring of incoming athletic director Brad Davis, who was Mercyhurst’s athletic director for the past five years.
