Longtime Drexel men’s lacrosse coach Brian Voelker has retired, the school announced Sunday. Dragons assistant Steve Boyle has been named the interim head coach.

Voelker is the second-winningest head coach in Drexel history after going 114-98 in 15 seasons. He was previously the head coach at Penn for seven seasons. He also coached in the pros, guiding the Baltimore Bayhawks to a division title in Major League Lacrosse.

A National Lacrosse Hall of Fame player, Voelker was a three-time All-American defenseman at Johns Hopkins and won two world championships with the U.S. National Team. A 1991 Hopkins graduate, he got into coaching as a defensive coordinator for the Blue Jays.

“After some serious discussions with my wife, I have decided to step down,” Voelker said. "It's been a pleasure to be the lacrosse coach at Drexel, but I think it's time for a new chapter in my life. I'm proud of all we've accomplished in the 15 years I've been here.”

Voelker led the Dragons to the CAA playoffs 12 times, winning conference championships in 2014 and 2021, and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 2014. He was the 2021 CAA Coach of the Year.

“His presence around the department will surely be missed,” Drexel athletic director Maisha Kelly said.

Voelker previously led Penn to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, ending the Quakers’ 15-year postseason absence in 2004.

Boyle has been an assistant at Drexel since 2014, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator. The school said a search is underway for a new head coach.
