Colleen McCaffrey has been named the sixth head coach in George Washington women’s lacrosse history, the school announced Wednesday.

“I am thrilled to welcome Coach McCaffrey to George Washington and believe that her experience as a coach and as a player will help lead our lacrosse program to a championship level,” athletic director Tanya Vogel said in a press release. “Colleen is the right leader for this program at this critical time in its development. She has a track record of developing citizen leaders, and I am confident she will bring the discipline necessary for this program to achieve success on the field.”

McCaffrey was the associate head coach at Bryant this season. She helped lead the Bulldogs to their most successful season in program history, earning a share of the Northeast Conference regular-season title (12-5, 7-1 NEC) before advancing to the conference championship game.

McCaffrey coached nine All-NEC student-athletes at Bryant, including the NEC Offensive Player of the Year (Kenna Kaut) and the NEC Rookie of the Year (Jessica Colalillo).

“I’d like to thank Tanya Vogel for welcoming me into the GW Athletics family and selecting me to lead the women’s lacrosse program,” McCaffrey said. “I’m looking forward to developing our student-athletes and helping them face the dynamic challenges of the game and beyond. Our players will lead on and off the field, and I can’t wait to support their journeys.”

Before her time in Smithfield, McCaffrey spent five seasons as the offensive coordinator at Virginia. She helped the Cavaliers to a 50-38 overall record and coached a pair of All-Americans as well as an ACC Freshman of the Year. McCaffrey is familiar with the District after serving as an assistant coach at American for four seasons (2013-16). In 2013, McCaffrey coached the Eagles to one of their most successful seasons in program history, including the team’s first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent.

McCaffrey graduated from Johns Hopkins in 2012 with a degree in psychology. She was a two-time IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic first team selection and currently ranks in the top ten in Blue Jays’ program history in career goals (141), free-position goals (28) and draw controls (153). The former attacker also was a three-time All-ALC second team selection and a 2011 All-ALC first team honoree.
