Erica Evans, an All-American midfielder for the Canisius women’s lacrosse team, tore the ACL in her right knee in an Oct. 22 scrimmage at Loyola and will be sidelined “for an undetermined amount of time,” the school announced Saturday.
Evans, a three-time MAAC Midfielder of the Year and two-time MAAC championship MVP, became the first lacrosse player (male or female) in conference history to surpass 100 points in a single season with 76 goals and 32 assists in 2017. She also led the MAAC in ground balls (69). Evans played for the Canadian national team over the summer, helping Canada finish second in both the FIL Women’s World Cup and the IWGA World Games.
It’s a big blow for the Golden Griffins, who have won MAAC championships and advanced to the NCAA tournament in each of the last two seasons. Evans was named a team captain last week.
A press release issued by Canisius did not declare Evans out for the 2018 season. Recovery from ACL surgery through full rehabilitation can take up to six months or more. Evans also could choose to redshirt the year and return in 2019. The school said she will undergo surgery to repair her ACL in the near future and will be out until late spring, at which time she will be reevaluated by team doctors and sports medicine staff.
“Obviously, this is disappointing for Erica, especially as she was preparing for her senior season,” Teeter said in the announcement. “Everyone knows how great Erica is on the field, but she’s an even better person and she is a great ambassador for our program. Through diligent rehab and hard work, I know she’ll return to the field better than ever.”
