With its first win recorded, Novato (Calif.) holds strong atop the Nike/US Lacrosse West Girls' Top 10.

1. Novato (Calif.), 1-0

After their first scheduled game against Davis (Calif.) was cancelled because of bad weather, the Hornets didn’t waste any time putting Granite Bay away Saturday. Novato won 19-4 behind D.J. Wilmott’s five goals and three assists, Jamie Level’s six goals and one assist and Charlie Rudy’s four goals and three assists. Next up is a matchup with St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) on the road Thursday. Previous: 1

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 0-0

The Falcons’ opener scheduled for Feb. 28 against El Camino (Calif.) was rescheduled for March 19. They are now set to take the field for the first time Wednesday against La Costa Canyon, seeking their 34th straight win. Torrey Pines is coming off back-to-back CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship seasons. Previous: 2

3. California High (Calif.), 2-0

The Grizzlies have played two close games already, opening with a 14-11 win over Piedmont on Feb. 27 and then edging Amador Valley (Calif.) 10-9 on Friday after trailing by one at halftime. Rachel Leonardi had seven of her team’s 10 goals in the win against the Dons. Previous: 3

4. Colorado Academy (Colo.), 0-0

The Mustangs have some questions to answer early this season after losing some key players from last year’s third straight title squad, but they’ll soon know where they stand. Colorado Academy opens Saturday against Regis Jesuit (Colo.). Previous: 4

5. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 0-0

The Bruins ended their 2017 run with a loss to Colorado Academy in the state championship game for a third year in a row but they seek another chance at their 11th overall title this season. That quest begins when they open Thursday against ThunderRidge (Colo.) Previous: 5

The Wildcats open their first season under new coach Rob Salmon on Thursday when they host Novato (Calif.). They are looking to bounce back from a tough season and the early test will be a good indicator of their strengths and weaknesses. Previous: 6

7. Lake Oswego (Ore.), 0-0

The Lakers get started Saturday in the “Battle of the Border” game at Eastside Catholic (Wash.) and open in-state play March 13 at Oregon Episcopal (Ore.). They are coming off their second straight OGLA championship. Previous: 7

8. Arapahoe (Colo.), 0-0

The Warriors look for a strong start in Brianna Huynh’s second season, as they open Friday against Kent Denver (Colo.).  They lost just two starters from last year’s Final Four squad and will be led by a strong senior class of 13. Previous: 8

9. Eastside Catholic (Wash.), 0-0

The two-time defending state champion Crusaders open against two-time defending Oregon state champion Lake Oswego on Saturday. Their first game against in-state competition is March 14 against Roosevelt. Previous: 9

10. Mater Dei (Calif.), 2-0

Despite losing several top players from last year, the Monarchs had no trouble with their first two opponents, outscoring Newport Harbor (Calif.) and Tesoro (Calif.) 32-12. Tess Keiser tallied five goals and three assists against Newport Harbor, while Sydney Payne added four goals and three assists. Peyton Smith had five goals and two assists against Tesoro. BRINE/US LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Gianna Danese, Mater Dei (Calif.)

Danese was an all-around workhorse the first two games of the season for Mater Dei, helping her team to 10-goal wins over Newport Harbor (Calif.) and Tesoro (Calif.). The junior captain led the Monarchs in draw controls and shut down the opponents’ top players, according to coach Cressita Bowman. She had four goals and one assist over the two games and totaled 13 draw wins, five ground balls and three takeaways.
