Behind a 10-save performance from sophomore goalie Gabbe Cadoux, No. 20 Duke secured its first Top 20 win of the season over No. 13 Northwestern, 9-8. Cadoux made three of those saves in one minute during the Wildcats’ final possession with under 2:30 to play to maintain the one-goal lead.
“Our defense and Gabbe were outstanding today,” said Blue Devils coach Kerstin Kimel. “Our team overall just played great team defense today. To hold a team like Northwestern to eight goals is really a great feat for a group that’s relatively new and really young.”
After Duke’s hot start, leading 6-2 at halftime with two goals from freshman attacker Charlotte North, Northwestern fueled a comeback off Selena Lasota’s unassisted tally to open the second period.
The Wildcats went on a 5-1 run featuring two Lasota goals, including one scored off an intercepted pass on a failed Duke clear, and a game-tying score from Claire Quinn.
Knotted 7-7 at the 12:01 mark, senior Grace Fallon scored Duke’s go-ahead goal off a Maddie Crutchfield assist, followed by a game-clincher from North, assisted by Mary Markwordt.
North finished the day with a hat trick, tying Fallon for a team-high three points. Junior Olivia Jenner led in the midfield with eight draw controls.
Lasota led the Wildcats with three goals, while goalie Julie Krupnick had 11 stops.
