The NCAA III Men’s Lacrosse Championship moved into high gear on Wednesday with 16 games on the slate. Highlighting the games were a pair of overtime upsets.  

St. John Fisher posted its first tournament victory ever, stunning 2018 semifinalist Gettysburg 11-10 in double overtime. Freshman Jordan Depetres scored the game-winner with 1:17 left in the second overtime, giving the Cardinals a school-record 17^th victory of the season.

Another upset in the Keystone State featured Springfield continuing its magical run with a 16-15 overtime victory at Ursinus. Cam Glover’s third goal of the game was the game-winner for the Pride.

Springfield, which started the season 2-6 before regrouping to make the NCAA tournament, fell behind 6-0 in the game, but once again showed tremendous determination in delivering head coach Keith Bugbee his 401st career victory.

In the only other upset based on the Nike/US Lacrosse rankings. No. 16 Stevenson downed No. 14 Franklin & Marshall 12-9.

Stevenson, which began the season 1-6 against its typical murderous schedule, won for the 12^th time in the last 13 games. The Mustangs trailed 7-5 entering the fourth quarter, but then scored six straight goals to open the final frame. Ethan Christensen scored all of his goals in the fourth quarter for Stevenson.

Defending Champ Merrimack Moves on in Division II

Defending champion Merrimack held Mercyhurst scoreless for a stretch of more than 42 minutes in a 16-5 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

Mercyhurst scored the first two goals of the game, but then was held off the scoreboard until early in the fourth quarter as Merrimack scored 14 straight goals.

Charlie Bertrand scored six goals to lead the Warriors, who will play at Adelphi in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In other first round game in the North region, Tommy McPartland scored three of the first four goals of the game and finished with four goals and two assists as Mercy used a six-goal first quarter to highlight a 15-10 win over Seton Hill.

Mercy will meet LeMoyne in the quarterfinals.

In the South region, freshman Brian Robb scored the game-winner in overtime as Indianapolis beat Queen’s 16-15 to post the first NCAA win in school history.

UIndy will meet Belmont Abbey in the quarterfinals.

In the other South region game, Tampa scored the first seven and the last four goals in a 13-6 victory over Wingate. 

Bryan Karn made 15 saves in the victory, Matt Vetter scored four times and Ross Dickerson won 15 of 18 faceoffs to lead the Spartans to a quarterfinal matchup with unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Limestone.
