Remington Steele, a fast rising coach in college and international women’s lacrosse, has been named the new head coach at Bucknell, the school announced Monday.

Steele, who spent last season as an assistant at Furman, replaces Randall (Goldsborough) Swope, who stepped down in June after leading the Bison to back-to-back winning seasons.

“Our women’s lacrosse team has been on the rise,” Bucknell athletic director said in a press release. “I am looking forward to watching Remington continue that growth.”

Steele was the defensive coordinator at Furman, where he also coached goalies and oversaw recruiting. The Paladins went 12-7 in just their third season as a varsity program. Before that, he was the top assistant at Vermont for two years and spent two seasons on the coaching staff at his alma mater, Limestone.

“My goal is for us to be the most innovative team in the country in terms of the way we recruit, the way we practice, and the way we play,” Steele said in a press release.

Internationally, Steele led New Zealand’s under-19 national team to a fifth-place finish in the 2015 FIL U19 Women’s World Championship. That set the tone for a breakthrough eighth-place finish by New Zealand’s senior team at this summer’s FIL Women’s World Cup. Steele is now the offensive coordinator and goalie coach for Wales, which finished seventh at the World Cup.

Steele’s hire puts a lid on the Division I women’s lacrosse coaching carousel for 2017. Michigan hired Hannah Nielsen and Monmouth tabbed Jordan Trautman to replace Jenny Ulehla and Eileen Ghent, respectively. Startup Kent State, which will unveil its varsity program in 2019, inked Brianne Tierney, daughter of seven-time NCAA champion men’s lacrosse coach Bill Tierney, back in May.
