SPARKS, Md. — The historic Brogden Cup will be rekindled during the Fall Classic at US Lacrosse this weekend. The competition between the USA Select U15 and U17 Boys’ and Girls’ teams against their counterparts from Ontario will determine the 2019 Brogden Cup winner.

Originated in 1988 to honor former Johns Hopkins goalie Mac Brogden, who represented the United States in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, the Brogden Cup originally pitted post-collegiate club players from the United States against Canadian players.

More recently, the event has featured youth competition with the United States players being selected from tryouts from the National Lacrosse Classic and Canadian players coming from the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Canada won the most recent competition, held in Tampa last December.

This is the first year of the National Team Development Program at US Lacrosse, which led to the formation of the USA Select U15 and U17 teams. Players competed at first round tryouts, coordinated by the Premier Lacrosse League and Women’s Professional Lacrosse League around the country, before advancing to a National Combine at US Lacrosse in August. The USA Select teams were selected following the National Combine.

This year’s competition will be a Ryder Cup-style format with eight games between the two countries. The U.S. will need to win a majority of games to take the Brogden Cup away from Canada.
