La Salle University announced Tuesday that women’s lacrosse player Brittany Stevens, a junior, died Sunday at age 20. The cause of death was not reported.

Stevens, an attacker, started seven games last season and recorded a career-high nine assists, fourth most on the team. She also tallied 10 ground balls.

“Brittany was a dedicated young woman who was committed to serving the University and those around her,” La Salle coach Katie Rhodes Abbott said in an official release. “This is a devastating loss for our lacrosse family. We will miss her enormously.”

Born on March 31, 1999, in Catonsville (Md.), Stevens was passionate about sports. According to her obituary, she participated in lacrosse, field hockey, basketball and swimming. She also had a passion for service, donating her time to Habitat for Humanity for projects in Atlanta, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Kenya.

“The entire Atlantic 10 family is saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of La Salle student-athlete Brittany Stevens,” Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said. “Hers was a beautiful life with a bright future that came to a heartbreaking close much too early. We share our prayers and support with Brittany’s family, the La Salle lacrosse team and university community today.”
