Archbishop Spalding (Md.) beat Calvert Hall (Md.) 14-8 on May 4 for their first-ever win over the Cardinals, prompting a massive rise in the Nike / USA Lacrosse High School Boys' National Top 25.

Josh Tang and Michael Weisshaar each scored five goals in the historic win. Will Duffy, Nicholas Gutierrez, Blake Malamphy and Ryan Schrier all recorded one assist apiece, as the Cavaliers made a point to return to an unselfish style of play.

Spalding topped No. 6 St. Mary’s 10-6 on Thursday to secure second place in the MIAA with the regular season wrapping up Tuesday. Michael Weisshaar scored three goals, Gutierrez, Race Ripley and Josh Tang each had two goals and Finn Kelly added one goal. Ripley also had one assist. Jake Oliver made seven saves as the Cavs beat St. Mary’s for the first time since 2013.

Two historic wins is a good way to state your case, and the Cavaliers did just that.

The way St. Anthony’s has dominated its early competition provides a clear indication of how the team has been hurt by not being able to play out-of-state opposition during the pandemic-affected season. The Friars have outscored opponents 45-12 in three lopsided wins. A true test finally comes in the first of three meetings against rival Chaminade Tuesday. Previous: 1

2. Chaminade (N.Y.), 4-0

In a game that was a little too close for comfort, the Flyers edged Iona Prep (N.Y.) 11-10 on Thursday. Mac Rodriguez had three goals, Will Lynch chipped in a pair, Connor McCabe had one goal and three assists and Charles Balsamo and Christian Rodriguez each added one goal and two assists. 3. Brunswick (Conn.), 10-2

The Bruins now have two losses by two goals, falling to Deerfield (Mass.) 12-11 in a classic Wednesday, but the response was immediate. Brunswick bounced back to defeat Salisbury School (Conn.) 9-8 on Saturday. Mackesy scored the overtime winner, his fourth of the game. He added two assists, and Tomas Delgado added a pair of goals. 4. Darien (Conn.), 9-1

The Blue Wave have bounced back from an overtime defeat to Brunswick to win four straight, including a 15-11 victory over Wilton (Conn.). Matt Minicus finished with five goals and three assists, Holy Matheis had three goals and two assists, Brady Pokorny tallied two goals and two assists and Matt Stein tacked on a pair of goals. 5. Victor (N.Y.), 1-0

Dan Stone’s first win as Victor coach proved to be a memorable one, with the Blue Devils rallying from a 6-3 deficit in the first half to defeat Hilton 13-8. Cal Lambert scored eight goals to lead the way. Previous: 5

6. Manhasset (N.Y.). 2-0

Manhasset has opened the 2021 season with back-to-back wins, including a 16-0 victory over Hewlett (N.Y.). Alex Giacobe and Aidan Haggerty finished with two goals and one assist, and Hunter Panzik, Connor Gately and Aidan Mulholland added two goals apiece. Manhasset renews its longtime rivalry with Garden City on Saturday. Previous: 6

7. Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 2-0

After a season-opening 22-2 victory over Half Hollow Hills West (N.Y.), SWR knocked off Harborfields (N.Y.) 19-7. The high-flying Wildcats were led by Alec Gregorek (five goals and two assists), Liam Kershis (four goals and four assists) and Johnny Schwartz (four goals and one assist). Previous: 7

The 2019 New York State Class A champions finally returned to the field Wednesday, defeating Calhoun (N.Y.) 15-8. Anthony Mollica had seven goals, Jack Nichtern added four goals and two assists and Aidan Christie and Vincent McDermott each had four assists. Previous: 8

9. Ward Melville (N.Y.), 3-0

The Patriots raced out of the gate to win their first three games of the 2021 season, including a 10-5 victory over Sachem North (N.Y.). Kevin Dolan finished with three goals and two assists, Trevor Dunn had three goals and one assist, Nicholas Barbero added one goal and two assists and Madden Murphy and Michael Kitevski combined to win 17 of 19 faceoffs. Mount Sinai enters the rankings off consecutive wins to start the 2021 season. Joey Spallina had two goals and one assist, Lucas LaForge and Nick Colantonio added two goals apiece and Matt Graffeo made five saves to lead Mount Sinai to an 8-3 win over Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) after a season-opening 18-4 victory over Sayville (N.Y.). 1. McDonogh (Md.), 9-0

McDonogh defeated John Carroll (Md.) 17-11 on Friday. Hugh Brown scored the first two goals for the Eagles as part of his hat trick, and they never trailed again after a 1-0 deficit. McCabe Millon had four goals and four assists, Garrett Hofmeister tallied four goals, and Jack Horrigan and Dante Trader each scored two goals. McDonogh can remain unbeaten heading into the postseason with a win at Gilman (Md.) on Tuesday. Previous: 2

2. Georgetown Prep (D.C.), 7-1

The Hoyas defeated St. Albans (D.C.) twice last week, starting with a 19-5 decision Thursday. Hugh Mullane finished with five goals and one assist, Zach Whittier and Dylan Hsu each had two goals and two assists and Quinn McBride and Seamus O’Malley scored two goals apiece. Patrick Fitzgerald added one goal and one assist, Colin Burns contributed one goal and two assists and Owen Horning, Larry Horning, Connor Remington and Brandon Boyle had one goal apiece. GP won 21-7 over St. Albans on Saturday. Hsu had four goals and one assist, Boyle finished with three goals and one assist, Michael Ridgway and Whittier each tallied two goals and two assists, Mullane and Jack Callahan added two goals and one assist and Will Angrick and Burns contributed one goal and one assist apiece. St. John’s got a late start to its regular scheduled games but has been impressive. The Cadets beat Paul VI 12-4 on Saturday after Paul VI had knocked off former No. 1 Gonzaga (D.C.). Jay Haley scored five goals, Gavin Kelly tallied three goals, Ryan Duenkel had a pair of goals and Luke Rhoa and John Draley scored one goal apiece. Duenkel led the team with three assists, Draley had two helpers and JL Duly, Paul Garza and Haley each had one assist. Caleb Fyock made seven saves. The Cadets have a 61-18 scoring edge on opponents this year, and they have won four straight games since falling to Culver Academy (Ind.) on March 22. 5. Gonzaga (D.C.), 2-1  

The Purple Eagles lost 12-7 at Paul VI on Wednesday despite three goals from Luke Raymond, two goals from James Matan and one goal apiece from Ryan Splaine and Jack Norton. They bounced back to beat The Heights (Md.) 14-3 on Friday. Raymond tallied one goal and two assists, Brendan Lane had two goals and one assist, Charles Wise scored two goals and Norton, Splaine, Johnny Stanton, Deuce Lee, Charlie Taylor, Brock Schaffner, Ryan Taylor, Ian McGlynn and Tom Neill all had one goal apiece. 6. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 13-2      

The Friars went 2-1 last week, beginning with an 8-5 win over Episcopal (Pa.) on May 4. Nick Potemski led with two goals and two assists, Eric Spanos and AJ Nikolic each scored two goals, Joseph Sheridan had one goal and one assist and Will Peden added one goal. Matthew Caccese forced four turnovers, and Pup Buono forced two. Joe Doherty made five saves, and O’Grady made four saves. Malvern then lost to Haverford (Pa.) 9-8 on Thursday. Spanos scored two goals, Cooper Frankenheimer had one goal and one assist and won 4 of 6 faceoffs, and Potemski, Nikolic, Sheridan, Caccese and Tucker Milhous all added one goal apiece. The Friars rebounded to beat Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) on Saturday by a 10-5 count. They raced out to leads of 6-1 at halftime and 10-2 after three quarters. 7. Summit (N.J.), 7-0

Summit held Scotch Plains-Fanwood (N.J.) scoreless in the second and third quarters on its way to a 10-5 win on Wednesday. Michael Bonomo had a hat trick and one assist, Hunter Schluter tallied one goal and four assists, Colin Beatty scored three goals, Luke DiNola added two goals and one assist and Dylan Sebastian had one goal and one assist. The defense delivered again in a 6-3 win over Chatham (N.J.) on Saturday. Jake Rainero won 12 of 14 faceoffs, Matt Vigliotta had four ground balls and DiNola and Sebastian registered hat tricks as Summit stayed perfect heading into a showdown with previous top 10 Delbarton on Thursday. 8. St. Mary’s (Md.), 6-2

St. Mary’s beat Boys’ Latin 11-10 on May 4 on Tyler Barnett’s game-winner with 2:34 left in overtime. Nick Golini led with four goals, while Barnett finished with two goals along with Nicky Souza and Bobby Keane. Will Hopkins had a pair of assists, and Owen Barcus, Golini and Tommy Manley also added helpers. The Saints then lost 10-6 to Archbishop Spalding on Thursday. Barnett had two goals, and Will Brimhall, Erik Chick, Golini and Hopkins all scored one goal apiece. Hopkins added one assist, and Wes Schmidt made nine saves. Previous: 6

9. Bullis (D.C.), 6-3       

The Bulldogs lost 7-6 to Landon on Thursday. Connor Davis had two goals, and Jack Fracyon made nine saves. Tucker Wade, Maliik Wood, Spencer Hughes and Lucas Hilsenrath all had one goal apiece. They then turned around and beat Landon 9-7 on Saturday. Davis finished with two goals and two assists, Wade had a hat trick, Kieran Anzelone added two goals and one assist, Wood tallied one goal and one assist and Chase Band chipped in one goal. Fracyon made eight saves, while Tyler Kuehl caused two turnovers and had seven ground balls and Charlie Muller caused three turnovers and had five ground balls. Previous: 5

The Ironmen stopped previously unbeaten Mountain Lakes (N.J.) by an 8-7 count on May 3. Defenseman Damien Blando made two late defensive plays to help Bosco preserve the win. Connor Gorman had two goals and one assist, Koleton Marquis tallied one goal and two assists, Mason Carfello had three assists and Mark Marino and Max Thomas each contributed one goal and one assist. Liam Sayre recorded eight ground balls, and A.J. Monaco collected seven ground balls. Robert Simone won 14 of 19 faceoffs, and Kai Dimaculangan made 12 saves. 1. Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 12-2

The Rangers clinched a state championship on Sunday by defeating Highland Park (Texas) 10-8 after being deadlocked at 5 at halftime. Curran Rose led Jesuit with four goals. One day earlier, Dallas Jesuit topped Episcopal School Dallas (Texas) 9-3 to advance to the state championship game. Cameron Martin scored four times in the state semifinal. Previous: 1

2. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 16-0

Coach Tony Seaman has MLL titles and NCAA Final Fours in his coaching resume. Now he has a Florida Class 1A state title. The Scots won the title on Saturday by defeating St. Edward’s (Fla.) 13-5 with 10 different players scoring goals. Anthony Borodiak, Jack Schulte and Kurt Schwartz each scored twice to lead the attack. A day earlier, St. Andrew’s defeated Canterbury (Fla.) 11-1 in the state semifinal. 3. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 17-0

The Crusaders completed an unbeaten season with a state title on March 26, defeating Hough (N.C.) 14-5. Bryce Wojnovich, a Jacksonville recruit, was named the state championship game MVP for his five-goal performance. Junior Caden Zadell led Cardinal Gibbons with 42 goals this season. Previous: 2

4. Blessed Trinity (Ga.), 20-0

The Titans have clinched a spot in the state final four. Blessed Trinity won its quarterfinal matchup against Lovett (Ga.) 17-11 on Thursday after topping McIntosh (Ga.) on May 3 by a 16-4 margin. The Titans face Westminster (Ga.) in the state semifinal. Previous: 4

5. Jupiter (Fla.), 18-1

The seniors ended their last season at Jupiter the same way they ended their first season — as state champions. The Warriors won the Florida Class 2A title on Saturday by defeating Winter Park (Fla.) 12-8. Max Sanderson had a hat trick in the state final. A day earlier, Jupiter defeated Plant (Fla.) 14-6 as Sanderson scored four goals and Trace Hogan contributed a hat trick. Previous: 8

6. Highland Park (Texas), 14-3

The Highlanders came a game shy of winning a state championship, falling to Dallas Jesuit 10-8 on Sunday after holding a 6-5 lead early in the second half. Thomas Mencke, a Virginia recruit, and Sam Wheeler each had hat tricks to power the offense. Highland Park advanced to the state championship game by defeating Woodlands (Texas) 7-4. Mencke had three goals and a pair of assists in the semifinal. Previous: 3

7. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 15-1

The Sharks’ season concluded in a shocking overtime playoff loss to Creekside (Fla.). Maddox Johnson led Ponte Vedra with 49 goals, while Jack Reed led the squad in assists with 20. Previous: 6

8. Middle Creek (N.C.), 12-1

The Mustangs’ season came to an end March 17, losing to eventual state champion Cardinal Gibbons 12-7. Eight Mustangs tallied double figures in goals this year, led by junior Tate Jones, who had 36. Charlie Riesett won more than 90 percent of faceoffs. Previous: 7

9. Louisville St. Xavier (Ky.), 17-3

The Tigers defeated Male (Ky.) 22-1 to win a district title on Saturday. Hillis Burns, an Air Force recruit, scored four times in the district championship. St. Xavier defeated Atherton (Ky.) 33-0 en route to the district final. St. Xavier faces North Oldham (Ky.) in the state quarterfinal. Previous: 10

10. St. Edward’s (Fla.), 16-5

The Pirates’ run in the state tournament came to an end on Saturday, as St. Edward’s fell just short of a title. St. Edward’s lost to St. Andrew’s (Fla.) 13-5 in the state final on Saturday. A day before, St. Edward’s topped Bolles (Fla.) 15-13 in the semifinal. Sophomore Ricky Savage tallied six goals and two assists in the semifinal. Ford Norris had a hat trick in the final. Midwest Top 10

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 12-1

The Eagles got by another top Buckeye State foe in Cincinnati St. Xavier, led by a superb performance from Alec Vaccaro, as he went 15-for-21 on faceoffs, as well as the strong attacking presence of sophomore Davis Provost, who tallied four goals. Next up for Culver is a battle of national interest as it plays host to undefeated IMG Academy (Fla.).  Previous: 1

2. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 16-1

The Golden Bears captured the top bracket at the MSLCA tournament with a 14-8 win over Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) and a 12-4 victory over Dublin Jerome (Ohio) in the title game. In the latter contest, Upper Arlington’s 12 goals came from eight different scorers, including two goals apiece from Sam Burns, Tanner Gillie and Marco Landolfi. Previous: 4

3. New Trier (Ill.), 7-0

The first time New Trier took on Central Suburban League rival Glenbrook South (Ill.) on April 19, there was some stress for the Trevians as they trailed 6-4 at the half. Their second meeting Thursday featured a far more dominant New Trier, as the Trevians raced out to an 11-1 lead en route to a 15-7 victory, led by a Johnny Hackett hat trick.  Previous: 2

4. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 4-0

The Ramblers remained undefeated on the young season, beating Fenwick (Ill.) and Stevenson (Ill.) by a combined margin of 43-4. Big battles loom against a trio of undefeated in-state rivals in Lake Forest (Friday), Maine South (Saturday) and New Trier (May 18). Previous: 3

5. Brother Rice (Mich.), 10-2

Brother Rice and Detroit Country Day (Mich.) on Saturday had a great back-and-forth battle that was tied at five, six and seven before the Warriors pulled away with a 4-0 run en route to a 13-8 victory. Brother Rice’s combination of Connor Borkowicz, Luke Dudley and Christian McNulty simply proved to be overwhelming come crunch time, manufacturing one pivotal goal after another. Previous: 6

6. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 16-2

The Celtics suffered their second loss of the season Saturday in the MSLCA tournament title game against Upper Arlington despite two goals apiece from Jackson Byrne and Marek Tzagournis. The day before, Jerome avenged its only other loss of 2021, taking down Hudson (Ohio) 14-11 while picking up an impressive road win over Springboro (Ohio) earlier in the week. Previous: 8

7. Hudson (Ohio), 16-1

The Explorers faced three of their tougher tests of the season this past week. On Wednesday, Hudson edged St. Ignatius (Ohio) 7-5 then suffered its first loss to Dublin Jerome on Friday before bouncing back to top Western Reserve Academy 11-8 on Saturday afternoon. Previous: 7

8. Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 12-2

The defense stepped up Saturday to help the Royals push their win streak to seven. With Hamilton Southeastern’s normally lethal attack struggling against Culver Academy’s regular varsity team, the defense stepped up, including a strong performance from sophomore keeper Colin Krekeler as well as seniors Ty DeSplinter (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) and Jake Robeson (four ground balls). 9. Minnetonka (Minn.), 7-0

Minnesota has been the Land of 10,000 Twists and Turns thus far, leaving the Skippers as one of the state’s few undefeated teams. Minnetonka has pulled through some tough competition over four straight road wins, including doubling up on a traditional power in Eden Prairie 10-4 and recording a one-goal win at Lakeville North. 10. Hartland (Mich.), 13-1

The Eagles are on a tear, having won 11 straight since falling to Brother Rice back on April 10. Hartland’s wins include decisive triumphs at Detroit Country Day and Forest Hills Central (Mich.). Two more road challenges await against a pair of one-loss teams in Brighton (Mich.) and East Grand Rapids (Mich.). Previous: NR

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 6-0

The Wildcats survived a battle with No. 2 Torrey Pines (Calif.) on Saturday, beating the Falcons 9-8 on Luke Williams’ goal with 6:10 left. St. Ignatius never trailed, but the Falcons tied the score at 8 in the fourth quarter, and Williams’ go-ahead goal stood as the winner. Nils Barry and Will Miller each had hat tricks, and sophomore goalkeeper Chase Morgan preserved the win as the Wildcats solidified themselves as the West’s top team so far. St. Ignatius also added an 18-11 win over Sacred Heart Prep last week with Jackson Kane (nine points) and Barry (seven points) leading the way. Previous: 1

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 4-2

One goal separates Torrey Pines from the No. 1 spot after the Falcons just fell short of St. Ignatius in a 9-8 defeat Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Cook made 16 saves to keep the game close, as TP rallied from a three-goal second-half deficit to tie the game at 8 in the fourth quarter. The Falcons had beaten San Marcos 15-5 earlier in the week to rebound from a surprising 11-9 loss to Corona del Mar (Calif.). Previous: 2

3. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 11-1

The Tartans have won 10 straight since their loss to Mater Dei Santa Ana (Calif.), including wins over three ranked teams from California — Loyola, Palos Verdes and Corona del Mar. They extended that streak last week with lopsided victories over Los Alamitos (Calif.) and Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.).  Owen Binder (six goals, one assist) and Matt Groeninger (two goals, five assists) each tallied seven points in the 18-5 win over Santa Margarita. 4. Corner Canyon (Utah), 15-0

Eric Neilson recorded five goals and five assists for his second straight game with 10 points, leading the Chargers to a 20-4 win over American Fork (Utah) on Friday. Jon King posted a team-high seven goals, while Mason Quick also had seven points on three goals and four assists. Neilson and King both had six goals and four assists in a May 4 win over Skyridge (Utah). Utah begins the state playoffs next week. Previous: 5

5. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 2-0

The Raiders got off to a slow start in their opener at Castle View (Colo.), falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, but rallied for a 9-8 win. Regis Jesuit then collected a 10-7 win over ThunderRidge (Colo.) on Friday. Official practices began April 26, so it could be a slow start for everyone in Colorado this year. Previous: 3

6. Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.), 12-1

The Cubs went 3-0 last week with a notable 11-8 win over Palos Verdes (Calif.) in which Aiden Lee led with four goals and Robert Roges added a hat trick. In an 11-6 win over Crespi on Thursday, Owen Gaffney scored a hat trick, while Lee and Matt Silvestri each added two goals. Previous: 6

7. Mater Dei (Calif.), 13-1

The Monarchs outscored their three opponents 56-3 last week, including a pair of shutouts against Santiago (Calif.) and J Serra Catholic (Calif.) behind a stingy defense led by goalkeeper Nick Colignon. Kyle Waterman, Cole Crisostomo and Grant Portillo each totaled seven goals each over the three games, while Sean Sanchez added five goals. Lucas de la Paz dominated faceoffs, winning 29 of 34 between two of the games. Previous: 7
