Albany women’s lacrosse coach John Battaglino stepped down Wednesday, citing personal reasons.
“After more than two decades coaching, I am stepping down as the head women's lacrosse coach at the University at Albany,” Battaglino said. “Lacrosse and dedicated student-athletes always will be my passion. In the immediate future, I will be exploring some other interests and spending more time with my wife and family.”
Battaglino coached the Great Danes to an 81-26 record in his seven years at the helm. Accomplishments included America East Conference championships in 2011 and 2012, league coach of the year awards in 2013 and 2014 and at-large bids to the NCAA tournament in 2015 and 2017.
The school promoted assistant coach Jessica Davos to interim head coach for the season. Davos, formerly DeRosa, is in her eighth season on the staff. She primarily has overseen the defense. The school said it will conduct a national search for Battaglino’s permanent replacement after the season, which opens Feb. 17 at Yale.
“It’s a privilege to lead this talented group of student-athletes as we move forward,” Davos said. “We have a competitive schedule, as we do every year, and we will be ready to play when we hit the field at Yale next month.”
