Making his first career start for a Virginia team in dire need of a quality win, freshman Patrick Burkinshaw, the No. 1-ranked goalie in his recruiting class, delivered on the hype with 24 saves in the Cavaliers’ 12-11 overtime victory at Princeton on Saturday. Burkinshaw’s effort has earned him Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honors.
Burkinshaw made six fourth-quarter saves — none bigger than the one with 32 seconds left in regulation on a Charlie Durbin missile from 10 yards out — en route to the most prolific performance by a freshman goalie in Virginia lacrosse history.
“In practice, we have seen Patrick Burkinshaw emerge, and we let the goalies know on Thursday Patrick earned the start,” Cavaliers coach Lars Tiffany said afterward. “What a performance by Patrick in his first career start. I want to give Patrick tremendous credit in the power of believing. He believes in himself. He had the eye and said, 'I am ready coach.’”
The Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week, selected by US Lacrosse Magazine staff and contributors, recognizes the top performers in Division I men’s lacrosse throughout the season.
