There’s a new king of clutch in town.

Marquette junior attackman John Wagner scored his fifth game-winning goal in its 12-11 overtime win over Providence, earning him Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honors.

But he did more than just score the game-winner.

Wagner had a team-high six points against the Friars, five of which came in the fourth quarter after the Golden Eagles trailed 6-2 at halftime and 7-5 after the third period.

Wagner assisted Peter Henkhaus less than three minutes into the fourth quarter to open the scoring.

After Providence responded with a 3-0 run, Wagner again had an assist, this time to Griffin Fleming, to bring some life back into Marquette.

The Friars got one more goal at the 2:26 mark to lead 11-7 before the king of clutch took over.

In the final 1:37, Wagner sparked a four-goal run with two goals of his own to force overtime, thanks to Fleming’s game-tying score as the clock hit zero.

Then just 14 seconds into overtime, Wagner scored the game-winner in a wild finish for the Golden Eagles.

Wagner finished the week with nine points, adding three in its 7-6 loss to Notre Dame on Wednesday.
