Rutgers redshirt sophomore attackman Adam Charalambides will miss the 2017 season due to injury, the school announced Tuesday.

Charalambides, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, scored 43 goals last season, the most by a first-year player in Scarlet Knights history. He’s a big reason Rutgers is ranked 16th in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Preseason Top 20, which was released Tuesday.

“Charalambides, who was the best player who is not a goalie in the Minto Cup, will be a monster in this up-tempo team,” one rival coach touted.

Charalambides, an Ontario native, plays for the Orangeville Northmen and became just the seventh player in Minto Cup history to score more than 30 points during the Canadian Junior A box lacrosse championship series last summer.

“Adam is a wonderful young man who has worked exceptionally hard on and off the field to be a great student-athlete and teammate,” Scarlet Knights coach Brian Brecht said in a statement on the Rutgers website. “He will remain engaged in all team activities as we look forward to his complete recovery and return to the field.”

Rutgers became the second Top 20 team to absorb the loss of a star player in as many days. Inside Lacrosse reported Monday that Zach Miller, an All-American midfielder for Denver, did not enroll this spring and will not play this season.
